Inspired by a desire to combat the textile waste problem and also the idea of using traditional men’s clothes to create a feminine outfit, this group created their outfit from their grandad’s and dads unwanted ties and shirts.

  • After selecting the ties they would use in their outfit according to their chosen colour palette of blues, purples and blacks, the group created their unique top by weaving the ties together and securing them in place using a combination of hand and machine stitching. The group used the ties to create several innovative design features including extending two of the ties to create the straps of the top as well as using the end of the ties to create a peplum at the waist.

The skirt was created by cutting large squares out from the back of the shirts they had collected, gathering them at the top before attaching them to the white dress they used as a base layer.

The woven top was also attached to the base dress and the outfit was completed with a large signature bow at the back, created from the left over fabric from one of the shirts and finished with a tie.
