Exploration and Creativity

Entering the Relove Fashion Competition is a really good opportunity to explore and master new creative reuse and repurposing techniques. We love to see students using skills they might already have or might have been inspired to learn to create their outfit.

Research

It is important to us to see that students have researched the type of fabrics in the garment or textiles they are using to create their outfits, the production processes and the end-of-life options. Your research will be an important part of your submission form.

Document Everything

We love to get a really good sense of the creative journey of each outfit, that's why we ask entrants to document everything from beginning to end, including any challenges you had to overcome.

sourcing FABRiC

As this is a reuse competition, we want to see pre-loved, pre-worn, donated or discarded fabric and clothing being used. There’s currently enough clothing on the planet to clothe the next 6 generations, so the opportunities for creative reuse and alterations are endless!

Here are some of our recommendations for sourcing clothing and fabric for your project:

  • What do you have at home you could use? Explore your house, and ask family members if they have unwanted materials you could make use of!

  • Charity Retail Ireland is the all-island representative body for charities who operate in the retail space to the triple bottom line, having a significant financial, social and environmental impact. Their 42 members operate 500 shops nationwide! As well as clothes, many of these shops will also sell donated fabric scraps or curtains, an excellent base for your creations! Explore shops near you here.

  • Local Freecycle groups operate in communities for people to pass on their unwanted possessions. Google one near you or explore the countrywide group, Zero Waste Freecycle Ireland.
