Inspired by the pastel colours of the shirts donated to her by her grandfather, Cara created this stunning summer outfit from the shirts, a pair of old jeans, a pillow case, unwanted zips and balls of leftover wool.

  • She crocheted the granny squares in a plaid pattern and sewed them together to create the outside of the bag. The lining of the bag was made from one of her grandfather’s shirts, the pockets of the shirt were reused in the lining.

The straps of the bag are made from the button placates of the shirts on the inside, with zips sewn to the outside to create a unique design feature. Cara cropped her jeans to create the shorts and used a decorative leaf stitch on her sewing machine to embellish the ends. She appliqued stars onto the back pockets and created detachable flowers from old zips to add some flower power to the front of the jeans.

She graded a vintage pattern to her size to create the two tone halter neck top. Using her grandfather’s shirts, she added an alternating frill to the bottom using a gathering stitch and created a buttonhole to fasten it at the top.

She also used a pattern to create the reversible bucket hat from the legs of the jeans and an old pillowcase. The hat is embellished with the same decorative leaf stitching and she added a detachable zip flower to tie in with the zip design feature in the other elements of her outfit. Cara used the leftover fabric from the shirts to create a matching scrunchie.

  • Cara’s research focused on denim production, highlighting the amount of water used to make one pair of jeans.
