Colaiste na Toirbhirte

This group gathered a black denim skirt, a men's shirt, and a variety of ties by looking at home in their own wardrobes, by asking for donations from friends and family, and exploring in local charity shops.

The outfit's name and look is inspired by the TV show Gossip Girl - set in New York, focusing on luxury fashion and social status in the city. The group's outfit uses the materials - a nod to the preppy styles seen in the show but also highlights that preloved materials can be used to make a wearable outfit, and not all clothes have to come from expensive brands. The group created a moodboard and sketched out their initial designs.

  • The shirt was partly deconstructed and altered to create this sleeveless and backless top, with the collar used as a halter strap.

The top is decorated with flower details made from small pieces of leftover fabric from the ties. The lined waistcoat is made from a patchwork of deconstructed ties, denim and off cuts from the shirt.

The group made the skirt by cutting the jeans along a diagonal line below the crotch and used a combination of hand and machine sewing to attach another piece made of patchworked ties to give it length.

The outfit is accessorised with a hairband, covered in leftover fabric from the ties and a scrunchie, also made from leftover tie material.

  • This group did research into denim and learned about how the indigo dyed warp threads, white weft threads and weaving pattern give it its distinctive twill.
