This outfit is inspired by 1980s punk fashion, both its DIY repurposed style and it’s anti-establishement ethos. It is Elliemay’s opinion that capitalism and fast fashion are some of the many things threatening our environment.
She also drew inspiration from 80s icons Cyndi Lauper and Robert Smith, as well as the dramatic, bold looks of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
-
Elliemay created her outfit from her dad’s old jeans, her grandfather’s unwanted ties and a pair of old tights.
-
Embracing the punk aesthetic Elliemay created patchwork denim sleeves.
She attached these to the top of a pair of jeans using the button fly as the front of the jacket.
To make the skirt, she sewed the ties together, alternating the thick and thin ends creating a triangular design feature at the bottom of the skirt. She used a tie as the waistband, tying it in a bow at the back.
Elliemay pleated a strip of denim harvested from the legs of jeans which she sewed into the waistband of a pair of the jeans to create a peplum belt with a yellow tie trim.
The top was made by cutting the legs of a pair of tights into strips, these were then tied together to create a netted look.

Elliemay researched silk production and highlighted the impact fast fashion is having by encouraging overconsumption.
