The items used to create this outfit were sourced from Touleen’s own wardrobe as well as donations from friends.

Touleen was inspired by the ‘Kawaii’ aesthetic and her favourite Sanrio character, My Melody.

  • To create the top, Touleen cut the neck line and shoulders of the white top and attached the bottom of a pink jumper to create an off the shoulder look with pink straps also made from the pink jumper.

Using a pink skirt as a base, she made pink and denim patchwork panels, harvesting the fabric from a denim dungaree dress and a pair of pink denim jeans. She cut the bottom frill off the pink skirt, inserting one of the pink and denim panels before reattaching the frill at the bottom of the skirt. She then attached the other pink and denim panel at the waistband to create a tiered skirt.

Touleen used the arms of the pink jumper to make leg warmers, sewing elastic at the top to keep them up.

She embellished each of the elements of her outfit with star beads and strawberry charms given to her by her grandmother. Touleen made the pattern for her My Melody bag herself. The pink parts were made from the same pink jumper and the white fur used for the face was harvested from old slippers.

She embroidered the yellow nose and used felt to create the eyes. She inserted a zip and used the straps of the dungaree dress to make the strap for the bag.

  • Touleen researched the cotton production and its environmental impacts, highlighting the intense water usage. It takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton t-shirt.
