Aodhín Kavanagh

Inspired by the landscapes and legends of old Ireland, the illustrations of Jim Fitzpatrick and the elegant, glamorous looks of the red carpet, this striking outfit was made from Aodhín’s grandmother’s vintage shower curtain, a satin scarf and bedsheets sourced from a charity shop and an old dress that no longer fitted her.

  • Aodhín harvested the fabric for the corset from her old dress and used the satin scarf for the lining.

Following a YouTube tutorial for the first time She repurposed some garden wire she had at home into the boning and made loops for the fastening at the back from offcuts of the satin scarf, the ribbon came from a box of chocolates and matches perfectly creating a beautifully constructed design feature.

The front of the corset is embellished with gold chains from an old necklace and bracelet.

  • Aodhín wanted to avoid cutting the shower curtain and so draped it around her mannequin to find the right shape and placement at the waist to turn it into the skirt.

She found a celtic style clasp at home and hand sewed it on to close the skirt at the waist. She also embroidered the printed flowers with gold thread and added some buttons here and there to decorate the skirt.

Aodhín added a celtic border to the skirt, and used fabric paint to embellish the bottom of the skirt with a gold celtic plait motif.

The underskirt was made from a bedsheet and is elasticated at the waist with a celtic motif painted at the opening of the overskirt.

  • Aodhín looked into the history, production process and environmental impact of elastane highlighting the fact that it is non-biodegradable and is often mixed with other fibres affecting their biodegradability also.
