Ayla sourced the items she used to create her outfit by asking her friends to listen to their mums and do a wardrobe clear out and by doing one herself.

Inspired by upcycle techniques she wanted to try out, Ayla created her jacket by flipping a pair of jeans to use the legs as the sleeves.

  • Ayla cut out the crotch area to create a neckline with a low back.

She attached the white collar of a polo shirt to the neckline creating an interesting cut out design feature at the back of the jacket.

She didn’t like the way the jeans were sitting so she decided to cut the legs off and used the shaping from one of her shirts to create the correct shaping at the top of the sleeves and for the armscye of on the bodice part.

She altered the shape of the bodice by creating darts or tucks to take the fullness out.

To create the unique sleeves Ayla gathered the extra length at the shoulder creating the puffed sleeve detail she also added white cotton godets to create the bell shape.

This lace is also added as a patch to the inside of one of the jeans pockets, balancing the white of the bows embellishing the pocket on the other side.

The bows are made from the fabric of the white polo shirt and echo the white trim on the neckline and the button loop.

  • To create the skirt of this outfit, Ayla cut squares from four different pairs of jeans.

After cropping the base jeans she sewed the squares in layered diamond pattern, carefully considering the combination of colour and texture for each square.

  • Ayla researched cotton production highlighting how the extensive water usage puts pressure on local waterways.
