This group made a list of clothes/materials they would like and asked their local charity shop to keep them for collection. They gathered three pairs of jeans and a purple top. They drew inspiration from ‘80s flare’ and the 2025 coquette trend - creating a moodboard and sketches to plan their design.
-
They started by altering the jeans. They harvested the purple fabric from the top and used it to create triangle godets - inserting them into the outer seam at the bottom of the jeans to create more exaggerated flares.
They used paper and masking tape to mark out the shape they wanted for the top on a mannequin and used harvested denim from the jeans to create the corset.
They installed eyelets at the back, laced with a strip made from denim.
They also used salvaged seams for the halter/racer back strap, embellished with a purple bow.
They used smaller pieces of leftover denim to cut out flower designs which have been machine sewed to the top and jeans - some with zig zag stitch applique in a purple thread to match the fabric in the godets.
The group also made a bag to accompany their outfit, made from scrap pieces of denim with pocket detail and lined with red check fabric. The bag has a zip and the strap was made from a denim waistband and hardwear.
They have finished each piece with neat hems and have embraced the natural fraying of the denim throughout. The outfit also features a hairband, embellished with denim flowers, and shoes with purple laces.
